It really was an amazing experience from staying in the Cannibal team house the first night to the actual race. Last year when I raced this race I got a bad starting position on the line and because of there being over 250 riders racing if you aren’t near the front from the start your race is over. But this year I was determined to get a good starting place and I ended up on the third line back, a fairly good starting place. The first five kilometres was a fast five kilometres and the the group stayed together. There was a few crashes with the bunch being so tight but I luckily avoided them. As soon as we hit the cobbles that was when the main group of around 30 riders were formed and we stayed all together in the first group until the final three kilometres where the winning attack of of two riders one from the Cannibal team who ended up winning the sprint. For the main group of around 28 now it was a minor downhill straight and a right hander into the velodrome. There was only half a lap for the finish and the group got ripped apart into a long line as the sprint started. Unfortunately with the extreme heat in the late thirties and the fact I had given my teammate my final drink as his had fell off on the five star section of cobbles I didn’t have the legs to go with the sprint and ended up finishing 27th overall a result I was very pleased with. A great trip all round.”
